About Me

I have been a passionate web developer for over 10 years. I started my professional career in 2001 with a Charlotte, North Carolina based firm called Empowered Benefits. In my role as a Software Programmer I developed an online health care enrollment system using technologies including Java, JSP, Perl, HTML and MySQL.

In 2004, I was hired by Vialogix, Inc., a web design and development firm based in Charlotte, North Carolina that focused on user-centered web development solutions. As a Senior Web Developer I was responsible for creating the functionality and development of multiple web sites based on design specifications. I specialized in cutting up design files in Photoshop and creating XHTML and CSS from scratch; as well as creating web ready images to use within the web site.

I have experience with client-side and server-side programming, as well as database design and maintenance. I am quite familiar with web accessibility concerns and have created a 508 compliant web site. Additionally, I have worked on several globalization efforts where web sites must support multiple languages (Italian, French, Spanish, German, etc.)

As Canadians living in the US, my husband and I made the decision to move back home to Canada in May 2008 to be closer to family as we started a family of our own. This allowed me to branch out and become a work from home freelancer in my area of expertise, web development. Over the last several years, I have assisted many of the US clients I did work for while employed with Vialogix, Inc. I have also connected with local companies and have acquired clients for which I have had complete creative control over the design and development of their web site.

During my time as a freelance web developer, I created a small web page for a local daycare, Douglas Ave. Children's Center. I managed all aspects of the project, including design, development, content, analytics and search engine optimization.

Currently, I'm working with SkillSoft as a Technical Content Reviewer / Subject Matter Expert. Over the last several months I have fully planned 2 multi-course paths that are due to be released in October 2011 - one of which is covering new features of HTML5 and CSS3. This has given me an excellent opportunity to keep my development skills current by being able to research and cover all aspects of HTML5 and CSS3. Not only have I planned out the entire path, which includes three 130-minute courses, but I also wrote all the code which will be used throughout the path.

My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as a post-graduate diploma in Applied Information Technology at Information Technology Institute (ITI). My development knowledge has been gained through both practical application and training. While studying at ITI, I maintained an A+ average and have been enhancing my skills with the latest technologies.

My ability to function effectively both as a team member and independently has been proven in a variety of work environments. I take pride in my ability to be efficient when faced with multiple tasks, and strive to work until the job is complete. Self-motivation, enthusiasm, and confidence are all traits that have contributed to my professional success.

Baker & Taylor - Retail E-Commerce

Baker & Taylor - Retail E-Commerce

Baker & Taylor is a leading distributor of books, videos, and music products to libraries, institutions and retailers. Baker & Taylor is also committed to being an industry leader in digital media delivery. When they were faced with an opportunity to create an entirely new retail e-commerce interface for the company, they turned to Vialogix for help.

Baker & Taylor wanted a consumer-friendly user interface for their clients who wish to sell books, movies, music and games. I was responsible for creating Strict XHTML and CSS from the ground up based on the designs by Vialogix and requirements laid out by Baker & Taylor. One of the major requirements of this project was the need for it to be Section 508 Compliant. A text-only version of the site was created for people with disabilities.

The e-commerce site was very well received by Baker & Taylor, and it was branded and leveraged for many of their clients, including Virgin Megastore, USPS and Best Buy.

National Gypsum Company - Spanish Website

National Gypsum Company is a fully integrated manufacturer and supplier of building and construction products worldwide.

National Gypsum's public website was originally designed and created by Vialogix in 2002, and was selected by B2B Magazine as one of its top sites on the Internet for that year. As a Vialogix employee, I was responsible for handling maintenance requests, code and database changes, as well as additions to their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) section.

With a high volume of Spanish speaking consumers, National Gypsum needed a way to reach out to the Hispanic construction professionals. National Gypsum asked Vialogix to create a complete Spanish language version of their website in an effort to make its resources available to all its users. I was the lead developer on this project, which involved a great deal of image work, SQL Server database changes and C# code edits to support the globalization effort.

The website launched successfully in 2006 and can be accessed from their public English website by clicking on the link in the lower right hand corner or by going directly to www.nationalgypsum.com/espanol/.

Douglas Ave. Children's Center - Web Redesign and Development

Douglas Ave. Children's Center is a Fredericton area daycare, preschool and afterschool center for 6 month to 12 year olds.

Douglas Ave. Children's Center opened its doors in September 2010 and was looking for a web presence to allow parents and future registrants a place to go online to view basic information about the center including contact information and a sample lunch menu. Another vendor was hired to create the website to launch before their grand opening. Instead of proudly marketing their website after its launch, they were disappointed with the results and approached me to redesign the site.

I was given complete creative control over the project, including design and development. One of the clients key concerns was search engine optimization. The original site could not be found with a simple Google search of their company name. I implemented my approach to SEO and the site now ranks among the top 5 search results on Google.

The website launched successfully and can be accessed by going to www.douglaschildren.ca.

JournalBooks - Website Redesign

JournalBooks, a division of Timeplanner Calendars, produces unique planners and appointment books. JournalBooks is known as "America's Premier Journal Innovator" and is highly regarded as the category leader of custom journals and notebooks.

JournalBooks was in need of a website redesign that allowed them to show off more products but in a simple, easy-to-understand format. Vialogix created a custom content management system to allow Journalbooks staff to create new carousel items (featured on the home page), edit or add promotions and easily change product descriptions and images. As a Freelance Web Developer, I was hired by Vialogix to create the Strict XHTML, CSS and Javascript using JQuery based on the designs by Vialogix (collaboration with Mervil Paylor Design) and requirements laid out by JournalBooks.

The website launched successfully in 2009. For more information on this project, view this press release.

First Citizens Bank - InfoTech Alliance Marketing Website

First Citizens Bank operates 340 branches in more than 200 cities and towns in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland. They are committed to providing superior financial services to individual customers and small to mid-sized businesses.

InfoTech Alliance provides banking and technology services to local community banks.

First Citizens Bank was looking to Vialogix to create a small marketing website for InfoTech Alliance. As a Freelance Web Developer, I was hired by Vialogix to create Strict XHTML and CSS based on the designs by Vialogix and requirements laid out by First Citizens Bank.

The website launched successfully in 2009 and can be accessed by going to www.infotechalliance.com.

Microban - Globalization of Public Website

Microban International, Ltd. is the global leader in built-in antimicrobial product protection. They specialize in engineering durable antimicrobial solutions for consumer, industrial and medical products around the world. The Microban brand appears on products in more than 30 countries around the world.

With worldwide consumers, Microban wanted to offer their public website in several languages to accomodate their 4 continent client base: North America, South America, Europe and Asia. The focus, specific to this project, was on their European website. Microban wanted to incorporate 4 additional languages to their English website: Spanish, French, German, and Italian. I was the lead developer on this project, which involved a great deal of image work, SQL Server database changes and code edits (ASP, XML) to support the globalization effort.

The website launched successfully and can be accessed from their public English website and choosing a specific language under the Consumers drop down box under the Europe section.

Haley & Aldrich - Website Code Rewrite

Haley & Aldrich provides leading edge underground engineering and environmental consulting services, nationally and internationally.

Haley & Aldrich's public website was originally designed and created by Vialogix using ASP and XML files. Most of the content of the site was contained in XML files. With the content not easily accessible to Haley & Aldrich employees, it became a difficult task to keep up with the maintenance requests they required, sometimes on a daily basis. They needed a way to easily make edits with an administrative tool, but since the website didn't use a database it became clear the code needed a rewrite to accommodate this need.

Haley & Aldrich was pleased with the design of their website and did not want the "look and feel" of the site to change. Vialogix was hired to rewrite their existing public website using C# with an ASP .NET framework. I was the lead programmer on this project which involved creating a SQL Server database, writing all the C# code and creating XHTML and CSS based on the designs of the current website and requirements laid out by Haley & Aldrich.

The website launched successfully and Haley & Aldrich was happy to take responsibility for keeping their website current with content modifications. They can now make changes to their client markets and services as they evolve, as well as add their own news releases, upcoming events, publications and awards.

The public website can be accessed by going to www.haleyaldrich.com.

Wilkes Regional Medical Center - Maintenance and CSS Rewrite

Wilkes Regional Medical Center is located in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina and is committed to being an outstanding medical center dedicated to the health of its community.

Wilkes Regional Medical Center's public website was originally designed and created by Vialogix. When I was hired by Vialogix one of my roles was to be the technical representative and respond to requests that came from various clients. Many of the clients that hired Vialogix to create a new website also hired Vialogix to perform the maintenance requests for that website. Wilkes Regional Medical Center was one of those clients. I was responsible for analyzing the request, responding to the client on an estimated time of completion, making and testing the modification, pushing the change up to the live website and finally, responding to the client when it was live.

In addition to making mainenance changes to the website, I was also tasked with making changes to their CSS based on a new color scheme and font designs. This involved changes to many of the CSS files as well as some of the back end C# code.

The public website can be accessed by going to www.wilkesregional.com.

Bank of America - Portfolio Advisor Design

Bank of America hired Vialogix to transform its Portfolio Advisor Intranet application into a much more efficient resource. Vialogix worked with Bank of America's design and development team, conducting extensive user interviews in order to get a clear picture of what they needed.

The resulting design had a much more wholesale feel and required far more information to be on screen than in other Vialogix work. I was the lead developer on this project, which involved creating XHTML as well as complex CSS and AJAX to enable scrolling and rollovers that displayed the information and avoided extra clicks within the site.

By designing the interface so that information was easy to access and use, Vialogix increased use of the Portfolio Advisor application by over 80%. The website was very well received by the Portfolio Managers, who could now access a large amount of data at quick glance.
